.DISCUSSION...
For today, the CWA expects to see another day of above normal
temperatures as daytime highs in the middle to upper 90s are
forecast in the valley portions of the region while the Sierra
communities will see highs in the middle to upper 80s. Desert
portions of western NV like those around Fallon also currently
see a 60% or greater chance of reaching the 100F mark today. As
such, the latest NWS HeatRisk map shows a widespread moderate
HeatRisk in western NV as well as northeastern CA with the
remaining portions of the CWA seeing mostly minor HeatRisk. For
more information on HeatRisk: check out wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/heatrisk.
But please consider taking precautions and staying hydrated today
with these hot temperatures especially if you have outdoor plans.
As for shower and thunderstorm chances today, the best chances (15-
25%) look to be generally relegated to areas closer to the OR
border. The latest runs of the CAMs show the precipitation window
in these areas opening around 1 PM PT and closing by 10-11 PM PT
tonight. The latest SPC severe weather outlook that came out
around 11 PM PT last night shows a marginal risk for isolated
severe thunderstorms in an area spanning from northwestern Lassen
County to northern Washoe County this afternoon, so some increased
outflow wind gusts due to stronger downdrafts may be possible
today. MUCAPE values look to approach 1000 J/kg later today in
these areas could allow some hail potential should thunderstorms
occur as well. While a brief downpour cannot be ruled out, QPF
values look to be generally low and dry thunderstorms are possible
allowing for some fire weather concern (See Fire Weather Section
for more info). While western NV appears to stay dry, lesser
shower and isolated thunderstorm chances around 10-15% are also
seen later today (potentially overnight) going south into the
eastern Sierra including the Tahoe Basin.
For tomorrow and going through the Independence Day holiday, the
forecast looks to show temperatures in a very slight cooling
trend with each day seeing daytime highs a few degrees cooler than
that of the previous day. Daytime maximum temperatures on the 4th
of July are forecast to be closer to normal temperatures on
record at this time. Afternoon and evening precipitation chances
continue at least through Wednesday though areal coverage expects
to spread into the Sierra Front on Tuesday and a bit more into
western NV on Wednesday. Portions of region along and west of the
CA border could potentially see up around 0.01 to 0.1 inches of
QPF with showers on Tuesday. The latest SPC outlook shows general
thunderstorms possible within the CWA on Tuesday and Wednesday,
but will be monitoring conditions in case the severe weather
threat increases though low confidence for this to happen at this
time. The forecast calls for Thursday being the breeziest day
with westerly winds gusting to around 20-30 mph in the valleys and
up to around 50 mph in Sierra Ridges. For the holiday weekend,
temperatures currently look to rebound and begin another warming
trend again. -078

.AVIATION...
VFR conditions are expected across most of the region today with
afternoon winds gusting up to around 20-25 kts at most area
terminals. The primary weather concerns today include the potential
for heat-induced density altitude issues as well as a 15-25%
chance this afternoon and evening of showers and thunderstorms
in northeastern CA and lesser chances down to around the Tahoe
Basin and northern Mono County.
Density altitude issues again will be most likely in western
Nevada where the latest NBM probabilities show around a 60% or
greater chance of daytime highs reaching 100F mark. As for shower
and thunderstorm timing today, the latest run of the CAMs looks to
show the window opening around 30/20Z in Modoc, Lassen, and
northern Washoe counties and closing by 01/06Z. Gusty outflow
winds are possible with storms later today particularly around
KSVE. Some models also show the potential for some nocturnal
showers between 01/05-09Z around the Tahoe Basin though they
could stay mostly west of KTRK and KTVL.
More shower and thunderstorm chances are possible on Tuesday and
Wednesday though the areal coverage spreads into the Sierra Front
on Tuesday and again into western NV on Wednesday. -078

.FIRE WEATHER...
Isolated dry lightning and strong, erratic outflow winds with gusts
of 50+ mph are possible (~15-25% chances) across far northern Lassen
County through far northern Washoe County during the afternoon
and evening hours today. Storms today will see the potential for
dry lightning strikes due to high storm bases and fast storm
motions. Lesser chances for isolated dry thunderstorms (10-15%)
are also seen in the Sierra down to the Tahoe Basin and northern
Mono County late today.
Coverage of storms likely expands farther east into the Sierra front
on Tuesday afternoon and into western NV on Wednesday afternoon.
These storms will be a mix of wet and dry storms with the best
chances for dry strikes expected again in areas of northern
Lassen to northern Washoe County on Tuesday.
Areas of localized critical conditions are possible by mid-week as
breezy an dry conditions return mid-week. -078/Fuentes
